On 26 April 2026, the aircraft commenced its take-off roll from runway 28 for a scheduled flight to Zurich. At approximately 106 knots, the crew experienced a sudden failure of the left engine, accompanied by a loud bang and visible flames. The aircraft veered left, and the crew initiated a rejected take-off.
The first fault generated was “ENG 1 Stall” followed by “F/CTL RUD TRIM 1 FAULT”, “AIR PACK 1+2 FAULT”, “ENG 1 FAIL” and ENG 1 REV UNLOCKED”. The “ENG 1 SHUTDOWN” message came at 1958 UTC/0128 IST.
After the aircraft came to a full stop, they informed the tower accordingly and began to apply the ECAM checklist until engine 1 was secured. Subsequently, cabin crew reported black smoke observed beneath the wing, and the fire brigade was requested. Further, it was reported that one fire bottle was discharged for ENG 1 and the maximum EGT was recorded to be 600c. The brakes on the left side also reached 600c before the fire tender sprayed the foam on left landing gear.
As a precaution, an emergency evacuation was conducted on the runway. All occupants were safely evacuated, four passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation.
Initial findings indicate that the failure was contained within the core of engine No. 1, with damage identified to multiple turbine and compressor stages.
The aircraft had completed an uneventful inbound flight prior to the event, and no defects were reported before departure. Weather conditions were benign, and both crew members were experienced and qualified. The investigation is ongoing, with detailed examination of the engine and flight data underway.
