An Endeavor Air CRJ700 operating as Delta Connection Flight 5304 sustained minor damage to both wingtips during a go-around attempt while landing on runway 27L at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on 26 February 2026. There were no injuries to the 68 occupants.
The flight from Montgomery to Atlanta was uneventful until the final stages of the approach. During descent the crew encountered increasing turbulence. The captain was the pilot flying and disconnected the autopilot at about 1,000 ft. During the flare, at approximately 30 ft above the runway, the aircraft encountered a gust and ballooned. The aircraft then rolled right, prompting the captain to initiate a go-around. While attempting to level the wings during the manoeuvre, the captain overcontrolled:
The left wingtip contacted the runway.
A subsequent correction resulted in the right wingtip contacting the ground.
After the wing strikes, the first officer took control and completed an uneventful landing. The aircraft sustained minor damage to both wingtips.
The NTSB determined the probable cause was: "The captain's inadequate compensation for gusting crosswind wind conditions while attempting to land and a subsequent go-around."
Contributing factors identified by the NTSB included:
• Failure to maintain adequate lateral/bank control.
• Aircraft control issues during the go-around.
• Gusting crosswind conditions.
• Inadequate pilot response to the crosswind and gusts.
Weather conditions at the time included winds from 230° at 14 kt gusting 23 kt, with a peak gust of 30 kt reported shortly before the incident. The runway was wet and the crew reported increasing turbulence below 1,000 ft.
