Beech E90 Fuel Exhaustion Accident

A Beech E90 twin engine turboprop operated on an instructional flight crashed into a hangar during a go-around at New Century AirCenter Airport, Kansas, on 16 June 2025.

The aircraft was conducting a short cross-country flight from Butler, Missouri, to New Century, Kansas. During the turn from base leg to final approach, the aircraft slowed below a normal approach speed. When power was increased, the aircraft yawed left and the flight instructor suspected the left engine had lost power due to fuel starvation. The instructor took control and attempted a go-around on the remaining engine, but the aircraft continued turning left, failed to climb adequately, struck a hangar, and came to rest on its roof.

Examination after the accident found almost no fuel remaining. Both pilots stated the fuel gauges showed levels in the yellow caution range before departure. ADS-B data showed the aircraft slowed below minimum controllable airspeed (VMC) during the approach and continued decelerating during the go-around. The available fuel was likely insufficient to safely conduct a go-around.

The NTSB determined the probable cause was the flight instructor’s inadequate fuel planning, which resulted in fuel exhaustion and loss of power in the left engine. Contributing to the accident was inadequate supervision of the flight, which resulted in diminished aircraft performance during the go-around.
